To train a puppy is no different than to train an adult dog. It is very important to start training early, and it all starts with teaching the puppy what the word means. We do this by marking the behavior with “good boy” or “good girl”. While using prompts and lures (treats) to get them into the command. After enough repetitions, you can fade off the prompt using less so the dog learns to go away from the treat. This happens really quickly, especially in food-motivated puppies. I have found to train a puppy is in fact easier than an adult dog. They have fewer reservations and are naturally looking for a leader and want to please. The big difference comes in the length of time you can spend training. Puppies are just like kids, their attention span is short, and are easily distracted by competing motivators. Like everything here at Species K9 this is not opinion or something we saw on tv. This is university based science that was study and published. Click here to read on such study about early dog training the effects long term.

At the end of the day, the steps are the same; science and psychology do not change only the dog. Or in this case the puppy.
Before letting your dog off-leash consider where you are. Is it legal to have your dog off-leash? Is there any chance that your dog could find something it should not eat or possibly wild animals?

Could you lose sight of your dog while out and possibly get stuck or hurt?

I am not saying you should never let your dog off-leash but keep safety first.
