A flat buckle collar can cause damage to the dog if used incorrectly. Training collars are just tools, they are no better or worse than the person using them. Your dog should never cry in pain from using any training tools or methods. Training collars should be annoying, not painful.
Purely positive dog training does not understand competing motivators or basic psychology. If the rabbit running through the yard is more motivating than the treat you have, the dog will chase the rabbit.
